Wauwepex Society events from the past, present and future.

April 1st, 2006 - Over 30 people participated in the first service day of the Wauwepex Society.

 Projects accomplished:

Kniffs Cabin and Lean-tos

  • Removal of cabin ceiling and reconstruction of ceiling trusses
  • Cabin rewiring to make installation safer and permit open ceiling
  • Removal of construction debris
  • Reconstruction of third lean-to (other lean-tos completed in 2005)
  • New roofs on two of three lean-tos
  • Removal of small trees for campsite barriers

Pawnee Rock Campsite

  • Renovation of three more lean-tos (two previously completed in 2005)
  • New roofs on two of the reconstructed lean-tos

Conservation and Site Improvemnets

  • Tree replanting between Arrow of Light and Tiger campsite for buffer
  • Removal of stumps from future Explorer Road parking area with donated backhoe time.

Camp Management

  • Inspection and maintenance of dining hall refrigeration units
  • Construction of picnic tables
  • Removal of old bunk beds from cabins for compliance with state regualations
  • Planning for consolidation of Cub World equipment in old Pioneer Latrine building
  • Inspection of Grace Building

May 21st, 2006 -Carshow at the Vanderbuilt with some of the proceeds benefiting the Wauwepex Society. Ten members of the Wauwepex Society along with scouts from pack 601 attended to help with traffic, car placement, getting entry cards filled out and  the color guard performed the opening ceromony and presented the flags then led the entire crowd in the pledge. The scouts also sold popcorn to help raise more funds for the society. A great time was had by all that attended.

June 24th, 2006 - Our second service day at Schiff, Over 30 people attended to help prepare the Grace building to be used as the medical lodge for Cub World.  Here are some of the projects that were completed:

Grace Building:

  • All furniture and garbage was removed from the building
  • All carpeting, staples and wood moldings were removed from all four rooms of the building
  • The back porch was converted into an  insolation room for health lodge use.
  • The double layer wood bunk beds were repaired and cute in half to create two seperate beds for each room
  • A large whole in the roof was repaired and all sheetrock and insulation was removed from locations of the attic that had water damage.
  • Two sections of the living room ceiling were replaced with new sheetrock and spackled
  • Two windows were installed to bring more light to the back porch.
  • The bathroom was cleaned and painted.

lyon Showers:

  • Various repairs were done to the shower house
  • Shower doors were replaced

September 30th,2006 - The Wauwepex Society hosted our first annual fellowship day and Thanksgiving feast in Hicox Hall at Schiff Scout Reservation. Over 75 people attended the event throughout the day. The days activities included scouting memorabilia displays, trading, reliving of camp stories and lots of great fellowship. There were activities during the day for the younger scouts including shooting bows at the archery range and various hikes around the camp. Later in the evening everyone was treated to a delicious Thanksgiving feast by Mr. and Mrs. King and Mrs. Mordini which included turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, dinner rolls, salad and was topped off with pumpkin pie and hot apple cider. After dinner we held a memorabilia auction and concluded with a camp fire. A great time was had by all that attended, hope to see everyone at our next Fellowship Day!!!

November 4th, 2006 - Today we started working on the caboose to prepare for The Camp Wauwepex at Schiff Scout Reservation Museum. We cleaned and painted the ceiling. Steel grid cage bars were installed over the windows and doors to secure the caboose from intrustion. Branches were also cut around the caboose to clear access to the musuem. Please keep checking back for more updates and future museum projects.

March 31st, 2007- Over thirty people participated in our first work day of 2007 and we accomplished some much needed work around camp. A great time was had by all that attended. We would like to offer a special thank-you to Bob King for driving in from Arizona to take care of breakfast and lunch. Here are some of the projects that we completed around camp. Hope to see everyone at the next Wauwepex Society workday on June 16th, 2007.

Maintenance Shop

  • The front wall was re-sheeted from T1-T11 and painted
  • New signs were painted

Plumbing

  • Various plumbing projects were completed around camp including work in Hickox dinning hall.

Lyons Showers

  • Electrical work was completed including lighting in the showers
  • Trim was painted

Museum

  • Completed installation of security bars on caboose windows
  • Cleaned caboose
  • Built and dressed manequins for display

Hickox Dinning Hall and Grace Building

  • Leaves and debris were removed from the surrounding area of each building.

New parking lot at camp entrance

  • Logs were moved into wood yard
  • Backhoe and Excavator were used to clear area for proper drainage

April 14th, 2007- The Wauwepex Society hosted it's very first roast and our very own Russell Rensch was the "Roastee". Over 50 attendees came out to roast Russ and share stories and Renschism's from Russ's over 55 year scouting history. A great time was had by all that attended, great food and great memories. The highlight of the evening was when Russ received his very own patch with his likeness roasting over a fire spit. There are many pictures in the photo section to check out. Thanks to everyone that attended this fundraiser for camp.

April 29, 2007- The Wauwepex Society hosted it's first annual Classic and Muscle car show today at Schiff and despite the early morning rain we still had a good turnout. We had around 50 classic show cars, many members of the Wauwepex Society running the event, many scouts and scouters from Theodore Roosevelt and Suffolk County Council attending, great food, vendors and entertainment. Thanks to all of the sponsors, show participants, supports and staff for a great event. Hope to see everyone at next years car show at Schiff.

June 16th 2007- The Wauwepex Society will be hosted our second work day of 2007 and over 48 scouts and scouters came out to show their support for camp.  Thanks to everyone that came out and we look forward to seeing you at futue Wauwepex Society events. Some of the projects that were completed include:

- All of the doors were repainted at Hewlett Lodge

- New windows were installed at Kniffs Cabin

-Conservation and Beautification project at the old parade ground and Woodsy Owl Monument.

-Forest Fire signage was repainted and relettered

-HVAC repair was completed on the camp vehicle.

September 7th 2008 -  The second annual Wauwepex Society car show took place out at Schiff Scout Reservation and even though our original date was rained out we still had a nice selection of classic cars, great food, vendors and entertainment and a great time was had by all. Hope to see everyone next year for the third annual Wauwepex Society Classic and Muscle car show at Schiff Scout Reservation.
